Bowden: Making the call

Adventures in Antigonish: Bowden's journal part deux

- March 12 2010

Another wonderful morning - our work stations have taken over the breakfast table now as we edit video and do research. Our hosts are so interested in what we are doing that we might actually get them out to see a game or two.

We had a Skype conversation with Elizabeth Etue who runs the international women's hockey website www.winih.com. We are looking at different ways to partner together to continue to continue to promote women's hockey.

I picked up The Casket, Antigonish's weekly newspaper, to follow their coverage of the event. We had seen rink board ads for The Casket at the Keating Centre and both John Bower and I thought it was a restaurant - no wonder we couldn't find it when we were hungry on Tuesday.

We taped the next installment of our daily show and then headed back over to Boston Pizza for lunch. Funny that neither of us has ordered a pizza there though.

Finally onto the arena to prepare for the first two games of the tournament - thankfully no technical problems to slow us down.

Game 1 between McGill and Montreal was fast-paced with the top-seeded Marlets coming out on top 2-1 in OT.

The opening ceremonies were traditional with the teams being piped onto the ice and speeches from dignitaries.

Peter McKay, a member of Parliament from Nova Scotia and the federal minister of defence, was unable to attend but sent along a statement recognizing the hard work of the tournament organizing committee.

Big brother is everywhere, even at the CIS hockey championships.

Game 2 was expected to be an offensive showcase but with more physical play instead, Alberta came out on top of Laurier 1-0.

As we were editing videos in the press box post-game, we enjoyed watching some of the St. FX staff practice flying a remote controlled inflatable blimp around the rink and then got it stuck in the netting above the glass.

On our way home, the sky was so clear, there seemed to be a million stars.

Two games down, seven to go.
