Day 2 Recap
Much of the same for the Ottawa Gee-Gees on day two. This time they fought back after trailing 1-0 but then hung on for dear life behind the goaltending of Jess Audet to force overtime before Moncton finally ended their dream of playing for a medal.
I never had the chance to watch Audet play at Concordia but I understand why they won back to back national championships - she has been a treat to watch the past two years at Ottawa. She never gives up on a play.
Ottawa now has a day off to regroup and what to see you they will face for 5th. The Gee-Gees record at nationals falls to 2-9.
A packed house welcomed the X-Women to the ice but couldn't push them past the Bisons, as the Canada West champs prevailed 2-1 in a shoot-out. And that brings up a whole new question - should we have shoot-outs in a national championship?
I don't believe so, I think they should play it out in OT until there is a winner. With that, I'm still surprised players / coaches don't realize that you can't deke on bad ice and need to shoot.
Manitoba I guess can be considered the queens of extra time after the triple OT thriller against Alberta, the OT loss to McGill and the shoot-out win over X. Fifty per cent of the games so far have been decided in extra time which means that the teams are all evenly matched.
And with all low scoring games, the tournament's leading scorer could have only a couple points.
Looking forward to Saturday's games to determine positions. Until next time.
