Thornton named CIS All Canadian

X-Women volleyball left side hitter Catherine Thornton was named a CIS first team All-Canadian at the gala banquet in conjunction with the CIS national championship in Edmonton, AB.
Thornton, the AUS Player of the Year, becomes the first volleyball X-Woman ever to earn All-Canadian status. Catherine, a native of Kobe, Japan, helped lead the X-Women to their first ever regular season first place finish and a berth in the AUS championship game.
Fifth-year outside hitter Liz Cordonier from the two-time national champion University of British Columbia Thunderbirds was named the CIS player of the year in women's volleyball, Thursday night. The Vancouver native became the first T-Bird in history to claim the Mary Lyons award.
Other CIS major award winners announced at the All-Canadian Banquet in Edmonton were Winnipeg left side Sonia Rossy of Winnipeg, who received the Mark Tennant award as rookie of the year, UBC's Claire Hanna of Calgary, named the top libero in the nation, UBC's Doug Reimer, who earned coach-of-the-year honours for a record fifth time, and Montreal's Nadine Alphonse of Montreal, who received the Therese Quigley award recognizing excellence in volleyball, academics and community involvement.
