Twice as nice

The X-Women volleyball team enjoyed a successful weekend with two wins at home against Moncton (3-1) and UNB (3-2).
Saturday night against the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues, the X-Women opened up the match with two consecutive set wins with scores of 25-11 and 25-9. The Aigles Bleues got back into the match with a 25-21 third set win, but the X-Women held their ground in a close 25-23 fourth set win for the match.
The X-Women were led by Katherine Ryan and Catherine Thornton who had 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Ryan tallied 16 points and also had 1 ace, 2 blocks and 13 digs, while Thornton had 10 points and 11 digs.
Subway Player of the Game Layla Calvi scored 13 points and had 9 kills, 1 ace and 6 blocks for StFX, while Jessica Nichols scored 13.5 points and had 8 kills, 3 aces, 5 blocks and 11 digs.
Stephanie Lagace had 6 points and 5 kills for Moncton, while Joline Richard had 4 kills and 10 digs.
On Sunday afternoon, also at the StFX Oland Centre, the X-Women played an exciting match against the UNB Varsity Reds and came out on top of a 3-2 match.
The Varsity Reds edged the X-Women 28-26 in the first set then had control of the second set, winning 25-13 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. The X-Women fought back from being behind in the third set and pulled off a close 25-23 win. They then won the fourth set 25-20 to force the fifth set tie breaker. StFX held the lead throughout the final set and took the match with the 15-12 fifth set win and 3-2 match victory.
Katherine Ryan played another strong game for the X-Women as she recorded 19 points on 17 kills and 1 ace and also had 2 blocks and 20 digs. Subway Player of the Game Catherine Thornton had 19 points, 17 kills, 2 aces and 10 digs.
Jessica Nichols contributed 16.5 points, 15 kills, 1 block and 15 digs in the win while setter Heather Isenor had 1 ace, 2 blocks and 11 digs along with her 58 set assists. Libero Leah McInnis made several key saves on defense throughout the match and racked up 26 digs.
Replying for the Varsity Reds was Tanya Paulin with 20.5 points, 13 kills, 5 aces, 5 blocks and 7 digs. Teammate Jillian Blanchard had 14 points, 12 kills, 4 blocks and 15 digs while Emma Hunt tallied 9 points, 9 kills and 20 digs. Libero Megan Dudeck contributed 23 digs.
With the two wins the X-Women improve their record to 6-7 and move into a tie for second place Acadia, as both teams currently possess 12 points, two back of first place Saint Mary's (7-5).
The X-Women will continue their home stand with a single game on Friday, Jan. 29th as they host the fourth place Dalhousie Tigers (4-7) at 6:00 pm at the StFX Oland Centre.
