Groulx cuts coaching teeth with Gaiters

Benoit Groulx is changing schools and languages by becoming the Bishop's Gaiters offensive coordinator.

It probably does give fans a start to imagine Groulx being part of another team after being the face of the program for five seasons (and two Vanier Cups) at Laval.

Going from a stacked team, Laval, to the smallest school in the QUFL is a calculated risk, but Bishop's coach Leroy Blugh has built his alma mater into a team which punches above its weight.

Not knowing of Groulx's fluency in English, going from a francophone environment at Laval to Bishop's might also help his coaching CV. Who knows, maybe long-term, it helps the Gaiters, whose last Dunsmore Cup came in 1994, the pre-Laval era, with recruiting francophone players.

Groulx is pulling a Ryan Pyear: the cerebral Vanier Cup-winning quarterback who goes straight from the field to being an offensive coordinator for a team which wears purple. This is a much bigger switch, obviously.

No doubt Rouge et Or fans are sorry to see Groulx switch teams, but he might find his way back to Ste-Foy someday. Laval coach Glenn Constantin also got started coached in Lennoxville, at Champlain College.
